Tools for the Success of Your Business
When opening a business, choosing the right tools can be critical to success. Although some tools are specific to certain types of businesses, there are some common tools that all businesses need.
Brains of your Business
Choose your computer wisely, as it will be your constant companion while setting up a business. Though business owners have used desktops in the past, today’s laptops now have hard drive storage space and processor speeds that rival desktops. Laptops can be taken home at night when there is more work to do. A warranty makes sense, as you will have important information on your computer. A machine with a minimum of 100 MB storage and 2 GB of RAM, or random access memory, is recommended.
Networks–Wired or Wireless
If you plan to hire employees or have a networked printer, an internal computer network will be a necessity. Wired networks are more secure and offer faster speeds (100Mbps, opposed to 55Mbps) than wireless ones, but are more expensive to install and maintain. If you have sensitive data or upload many large files to the Internet, a wired network makes sense. If not, a wireless network is a cost-effective choice.
Telephone Systems
If you want to have and keep customers, a good phone system with great call quality is a necessity. So is a good voice mail system that takes customer calls when you are out. A VoIP, or voice over Internet protocol, system is a cost-effective way to go. The quality, too, has surpassed cell phone quality, though not quite yet that of a traditional landline. If you have important critical information, use a small PBX, or private brand exchange, system. Some telephone service providers host the PBX functionality, meaning you don’t have to maintain the system.
Accounting Software
Accounting is a critical function for most businesses, no matter the size. Your choice of accounting software will be pivotal for your company. Don’t expect to run your business from a spreadsheet. Look for software that integrates with most bank systems to allow automated transaction downloads, as well as most POS, or point-of-sale, credit card transaction systems.
Your CRM Package
Choose a CRM, or customer relationship management, package that lets you easily track and locate key customer information. Customers are the lifeblood of any business and it pays to make sure that you know everything about their needs, wants and preferences. Look for packages that can be customized and scaled to any number of employees.
